Residential Designer and General Contactor

Design:

Interface Development Company, Inc. provides a complete residential design service. William Bateman typically meets with clients on their property, discusses their expectations of style and design and then executes a Design Proposal for the project. The Design Proposal is a fixed fee contract for all of the design work, drafting and various engineering consultants needed to produce a complete set of drawings for the permitting and construction project.  It is all inclusive and includes all costs.  We submit the drawings to the Planning Department and shepherd the plans through the planning and permit process as part of the Design Proposal.
We have successfully designed over one hundred fine residential projects to date and we have extremely satisfied clients, many who have become good personal friends during the design/build process.

Design Philosophy:

Design is so important and so many people pay little attention to it. Just look around. Homes should be designed to be timeless; to look as good fifty years from now as they do today. The majority of what we see being built today in this county is whatever the current fad dictates and in fifty years it will probably be torn down to make way for something else. I want to change that. I was privileged to grow up with an appreciation of fine residential architecture in West Los Angeles. We lived in Brentwood and were surrounded with beautiful period homes designed by Los Angeles’ golden era architects such as Wallace Neff. I have always been drawn to traditional designs, with an emphasis on Mediterranean and early California styles. Peter Edwards, a Santa Barbara Architect, has subsequently kindled my love for “Santa Barbara” style. I am also very fond of rural French farmhouse design. As a designer, I have always paid very close attention to my clients input and developed homes that suit their particular lifestyles. I know what looks timeless and well proportioned, but I do not force my ego upon their projects. All of my clients have come to me by the referral of other satisfied customers. People have gone out of their way to find me after seeing the homes I have designed because they are so different from the typical projects seen in San Luis Obispo County. Also, as a builder since 1977, I know how to design extraordinary homes that are relatively easy to build. Many designers lack the practical building knowledge to make this claim. I have developed many of my own techniques and details to make a new home seem like it has been part of the site for many years. I can make homes traditional and welcoming without costing more. It is all in the design.
